As the last of the light disappeared, she tiptoed across the stone floor to the bathroom filling her glass from the sink. The scrabbling noises in the corner had started up again, it was time for bed. She put her glass on the wooden crate next to her cot, and sat, picking up her stuffed bunny.
“Days are shorter again.” She gave him a squeeze and kissed his faded, blue face. “We are going to have to be extra brave.” They curled up under her covers knowing that as long as they were under them they were safe.
“We’ll be alright, Bunny, I know you’re afraid, it’ll be okay, it always is.”
Her stomach growled again. Miss hadn’t brought her any food today.
“Maybe she just forgot.” She whispered in Bunny’s ear.
